I wonder if any members have information surrounding the loss on 15/10/1940 of HMT Apple Tree a requisitioned Buckie registered steam drifter which was being used as an armed trawler operating in and around Oban whilst the port was being used as a flying boat base for Catalinas and Sunderlands. RAF pinnace no. 50 accidentally rammed the Apple Tree causing her to sink. The Pinnaces also operated out of Oban, being used frequently as floating landing lights with several of them marking out safe landing and take off areas out in the Firth of Lorne during operations.
For some years nowI have been trying to locate an accurate position for her sinking and wondered if anyone had any recollection of this incident or would know where records relating to the incident would be held? Grateful for any pointers. Cheers Iain |
