My ex-MTB 253, Medyna, was a J Samuel White design and build. She definitely had the OUTER planking with top to the stern. When we dry docked her at the old yard of Woods at Isleworth, we discovered that the proprietor, Ben Wood, had served his apprenticeship at J Samuel White, and was actually engaged in the building of MTBs 247-255. He said Whites swore by this construction detail, as the outer layer is normally slightly thicker than the inner, and running the outer from bottom forrard to upper aft made a stronger craft when pounding at speed, as it tended to spread the load up from the chines to the gunwales. But most double diagonal craft by other builders are arranged the opposite way round, including my 1941 Thornycroft 45 ft Motor Picket Boat, in common with most others. So how much difference did it really make? But it confirms the statement in the previous post re Whites' version.
