Hi all,
Just thought i'd ask this question as funding for these old boats doesnt come easy as most of us trying to save one have found out.
Besides the boats that have been restored by private ventures(recognition where its due eh guys & girls?) Are there any boats that have an amazing history(didnt they all?) tucked away in a creek either abandonded or houseboats that need help?
Wouldnt ask but at the rate they're being chopped up, shaming the goverment into action may be the only way for some of them. They aint as replaceable as transit vans & when they're gone, they'r gone!!
Just thought that if something like ML160(st nazaire survivor), one of hich's, dickens or ashby's boats was still around then they should be fixed for the nation.
What is the boat upstream of sungo? downstream is mtb458 but from google earth she looks like a 100 series? firsthandknowledge welcome there as going to fix a wreck this year but want the right one

Hi thee,
Re Sungo, believe at Cobden? bridge, Canandian Coastal Forces Trust, link on the hompage of this site, still I believe hoping to save and ship to Canada, though not heard anything of late. Believe this is something talked about before, a list of what is left of coastal forces craft, some work done ie at Shoreham by Phi Simmons, but not nationally.

Hi Jim,
as John K said, Sungo is on the river itchen by the Cobden bridge. Downstream of her is MTB458, anyone got a recent photo before she's written off? Upstream is a boat that could be a turkey but was afloat longer than mahaba but is now abandoned and sunk. Doubt she has the history of MTB102 & MTB24 but worth looking into. MTB24 belongs to an old gent called David Cuzher who keeps her in bembridge on the IOW. They have best intentions but MTB24 and MGB320 are slowly being destroyed by the gravel beach in Bembridge. Told mr cuhzers daughter i'd take on 24 with no clue how how i'd get her past bembridge harbour breakwater and keep her afloat. How do you you save a dunkirk boat ?
She needs saving as she got the first kill for coastal forces in the war!

First you prove that the boat you wish to save is a "Dunkirk boat".

Hi there,
Indeed, many vessels do claim to be Dunkirk boats, have seen on TV, checked my copy of Ships that saved an army and not always listed, not that that could always be definite. Moving such a vessel would need careful planning if possible, may need to be sheathed in plastic which has been done or even onto some sort of sumbersible platform, really to do with insurance if you could get it at all, ie they would say would you would need to do.

Me again,
Re above, before I get shot, not talking epoxy re sheathing, mean effectivly huge plastic bag around hull, moved a ship ex Glasgow some years ago, would need moving of the gravel as that would destroy the plastic at low water. Saving another vessel would be good, although as vice commodore Magic Fingers perhaps would say...we have existing vessels needing support such as MTB102, HDML Medusa soon off the slip plus the BMPT boats. Talked about this before, secure what we have, or add and then they will need looking after, though with the Newsons yard under 102 now, at least we know of a good place for any works.

Nothing wrong with sheathing John, just depends on what you want.

Correct me if wrong but thought MTB's 102 & 24 were the only surviving navy boats from dunkirk? Sure if 24 was offered to save i could blag a barge to put her in if not a barge & tug. Nobody put pressure on though as her owner is a nice gent in his 80's who bears a scary resemblance to captain Dickens. Christian, you seem to be the authority on this. was there a David Cuzher in coastal forces or did he buy a boat that had been neglected for years just in hope of saving it? Got the impression from his daughter that a swap for a historic boat with less work needed would be open to discussion.
Has anyone seen her lately???
Think a whaleback, a 100 series or a dogboat would have to be my dreamteam and if anybody has on then im more than a little interested

Hi Jim,
Sungo is on the river itchen in southampton and lived aboard(last canadian boat to my limited knowledge) As said they just upstream of the cobden bridge. Sungo is the middle one and at least afloat so in better trim than the other two bro. directly downstream is MTB458, now sunk at high tide and want to look at her at low tide if your in town to give another view to her viability?
Directly upstream is what looks like a british powerboat co 100 series but not been able to get hold of any1 local to confirm. she is sunk so not an easy project but i got time & talent if not money so worth a look mate!
When your in town i got one salvage pump and may be able to borrow a couple to raise one of these wrecks.
Whatever the posting, may you come home safely old pal....stay lucky mate!
