The University of Cantabria's ex 'Gay' class known as 'Nebli 2' is reported to have been involved in a heavy collision with a Spanish Naval craft that was going astern. The subsequent damage led to 'Nebli 2' foundering. She was raised but deemed beyond repair and completely broken up. No casualties were reported. This sad news makes ex-'Gay Archer', now undergoing restoration, the only representative of this class in existance. Does anyone know the original identity of the Santandar 'Gay'? |

Hello Christian Many thanks for the information. Out of the 12 'Gay' class boats, only six were built in 1953. So if the info is accurate it must be one of these. All the Vosper built craft were completed by 1952 - not one of those it would seem - while Gay Fencer (McGruer built, Feb '53) was sunk as a Target in 1968. Gay Centurian (Thornycroft built 1952) and Gay Forester (McGruer built 1954) narrows it down to one of 5 craft. Gay Carabineer, Gay Cavalier, Gay Charger, Gay Charioteer or Gay Dragoon. Thanks again Regards |

The Ship that Cried for a Name.
A rare shot of the unidentified 'Gay' class vessel taken shortly after the arrest. The contraband seems to take up the whole Fo'csle of the 'arresting' Customs Cutter, which appears to be an ex-German "R" boat. This picture is by courtesy of Ivan Martinez Garcia. Merchant Navy School. University of Cantabria - kindly forwarded by 'Christian'. |
