My father was 1st leftenant on MTB 414 - I've looked at the site and its not clear where the boat is now. Can you please help and can I see it?

Thank you - she looks amazing. However not sure what the sea keeping would be like in a heavy sea!!

Sorry 414 was a typing error - I'm hoping it was 416 as that was my fathers boat.

According to the details being put about by the Berthon boatyard in Lymington who are handling the sale of MGB 81, she had been redesignated MTB 416 by April 1944. MGB 77 had been redesignated MTB 414 at the same time, and both boats were involved in the action off Lyme Bay on 27th April 1944 when a group of E boats got in among a landing rehearsal for D Day. From the same source, MTB 416 was paid off in Poole on 27th April 1945.

Hello Paul,

I have been trying to find the ID's of the British Coastal Forces that were in action on the 28/9 April 1944 - So far I have been able to ascertain that there were 3 Brit MTB's lying off Cherbourg that night (ID unknown as yet) while Fairmile C 324 was certainly around on the morning of the 28th as she was ordered to 'stand clear' of any action. I understand that MTB 81/416 was undergoing repair at Hythe to repair damage sustained by EA on the 24th April - these repairs taking a week - so from that she would not have been involved in the 'Exercise Tiger' incident - where did your info come from?

As mentioned, the information came from the Berthon blurb which they produced for the sale of MGB 81. I laid hands on the blurb in May this year. I don't know what Berthon's sources were for the assertion that both 416 and 414 were involved in the action off Slapton Sands - I just reported it as I had read it.

For info, on page 140 of L C Reynolds Home Waters MTB's and MGB's at War 1939 - 1945, there is a photo of 416 in June '44, showing Sub lt G Baptie (1st Lt 416) with Lt Cam Gough (416) and Lt F Head (414)
