Hello All,

I am still trying to fit the pieces of my Grandfathers Coastal Forces career together. Can anyone please tell me which flotilla MTB 488 was part of? And also what was her gunboat number before she was converted into an MTB. 488 was the last MTB my Grandfather served on before he was posted to E-boat S204.

Many thanks,

Stormvogel

MTB488 later 1588 later RCB5 later C/T8205 was originally MGB169.
She was in action against E-Boats on 01/03/45 as part of the 1st MTB Flotilla.

S204 went to the USSR as TK1020, S208 became RN MTB5208.

MTB 488 was part of the rejunevated 1st MTB Flotilla.
This first Flotilla, as you may know, was originally Med based and brought home via the French canals - saw heavy action whilst based at Felixstow - disbanded in August 1942.
The 1st Flotilla was renovated in October 1943 with re numbered BPB Mk V 'MGB's' from the 8th MGB Flotilla.
MTB 488 - a 71'-6'' MkVI BPB boat (must bow to the superior knowledge of 'Christian' - above)

Hi Pioneer
I don't think she was ever MGB169 except on paper as she was ordered 10 April 1943 as MGB 169; reclassified MTB 488 September 1943; completed 6 September 1944; Reclassified MTB 1588 in 1949, Reclassified Radio Control Boat RCB(EL) 5 in 1949; later C/T 8205; sold 3 October 1958.

Hello Christian
Thank you for that last piece of info - I had originally 'posted' that 488 had never been an MGB - then I saw that you had posted the information that she had been MGB 169 (and then I edited it Embarrassed)  - but of course the fact that she was ordered as such (MGB) does not indicate that she atcually was one. My records show that she went 'new' to the 1st Flotilla as an MTB late '44.

Hello Christian,

A year ago you posted a reply to my message about MTB 488. In it you said "She (488) was in action against E-Boats on 01/03/45 as part of the 1st MTB Flotilla". Do you have anymore information on this action? Such as were it took place and other boats involved? I am still piecing together my Grandfathers war career, a long but rewarding job!

Many thanks,

Chris
