Might have overdone the number of old boats links above, but this link has lots of historic marine steam enginers. http://www.steamlaunch.com/engines/AntiqueEngines.html

You certainly have caught the bug for researching boats, in regards to the engine maker Bellis it is a well known name in the "recip" engine world, they went on to join Morcom and are/ were known as Bellis & Morcom building Recip air compressors which are still in use today.

I have emailed photos to the Maritime Trust(steamboat people) at Gosport. We have discussed the boat T4 and this is the gist of the coversation. That it could of been a pass boat or dockyard lighter, this is the most obvious history for T4, except that their would be no need for expensive lifting plate castings in the hull, nor for the expensive brass castings on the gunnel midships, which i interperate as a boarding step, so im still sold on the ships boat theory(though the wasting of funds has been suggested). I think we can discount the mast step theory, and except that the cast iron plate and pin on the keelson is a boiler slipper foot mounting.Though whether more than one steam engine was fitted i dont know. If it is a ships boat then it is certainly closer to the ships launch type than any other, a type of steam launch that was either part of the early MTB spar torpedo program or a ships steam launch. It certainly would have been outmoded by WW1 from the pictures i have seen. cheers computer frustrated Ant |

Im a bit confused as to the type of boiler, engine layout of T4, whether the forward position of the boiler would mean an upright scotch boiler and a engine in the rear, coupled with a keel condenser, or would it have been engine in the stern, a railway locomotion type boiler in front of the engine well and what(a condenser) on the front mounting, jump in Tramontana if you can explain. Spent the last two days fabricating and welding collars and stove pipe, to finish fitting the new kitchen solid fuel stove, this will make a big difference to T4s usability and help keep her dry and the rot at bay. Will post pictures tomorrow when i fire it up for the first time. Also gotta fix engine, saw a groovy restoration with a out board fitted on a tiller, and i which id thought of it last year. Still if i can get the backdeck ripped out and replaced i could start fitting the diesel tank and a proper desiel engine, the front deck need fibreglassing and oh yeah i need to build a new toilet and all by the school holidays. oh yeah and ive got an ear infection.

Well the solid fuel kitchen stove is fitted, with no real problems except for dropping the odd bolt in the canal. I then deceided to sand the edges of the mahogany doors for the kitchen cupboards as they had swelled and jammed, with an angle grinder sanding pad(given up on sanders and have tried all types) however it was only a tiny job and not metal so i neglected to wear eye protection and hit an old screw head, par for the course on reclaimed timber. This metal fragment then got embedded in my eye and spent sunday in casualty, and wednesday in the eye clinic, so work has crawled to a halt and i have been feeling well sorry for myself, but no permanent damage, so i have got away with it this time, and have promised the wife their will not be a next time. Found this Thornycroft launch for sale on tinternet http://www.stanleyandthomas.co.uk/brokerage/sereia/sereia.ht ml check it out and the price their asking. Anyone live near ipswich? |
