Here are two shots of what is expected to be a superb model of the 'Gay' class by Ted Childs. This is a scratch built model in 1/18th scale requiring all of the fittings to be hand built - I will look forward to Posting its progress

Very nice hull work, should be a cracker, is this going to be a static display or working boat?

     Hi Robotski.

Yes it will most definately be a working model. It will use three seven pole motors. But I dont know if it will plane at scale speed,as it is to be remembered that although you scale the boat you cannot scale the density of the water, therefore it needs to go higher than scale speed plane so considerable more power is needed.and this makes the model heavier.

Is the plan to plank the frame on the diagonal and then cross plank it the same way Mike Harrison did with his Ferocity.

    Hi robinski.

Yes, the sides are double diagonal with aircraft nylon doped on between layers, and the bottom is triple diagonal with the nylon under the last layer of planks, this is done after the sides are complete, and is the same as there full sized counterparts. The Nylon membrane forms a waterproof layer and increases the strength.

I had seen the planking done on full size craft, my father was a ship wright by trade, but I never knew they used nylon sheeting between the layers, see, you learn somthing every day.

regards

Mike.

         Hi, Robotski

On the full size boats they did`nt use Nylon the material used was aircraft fabric which would be too heavy on a model so the nylon used was the light weight nylon used to cover some model aircraft.

Flipping Hell.  I thought these things were built out of plywood.  This looks about as hard to build as the real thing!

I'm absolutely astounded because once it's painted, no one will know but the builder. Attention to detail or what!!

I take my hat off to the builder..

There is no doubt Ted is a true Craftsman it is a pity that it is going to be painted over

It always seems a shame with a hand built wooden model that all the Craftsmanship in the planking of the boat and the time taken to do it is painted over

Yes - I quite agree - I do think however that when this model is finally completed, if it is possible to view it 'in the flesh' so to speak - I'm sure the dedication to detail will show through. I still marvel at the detail in the Bridge for example (not quite captured at the 50k max for this site).

Here is a fairly recent shot of the model HMS Gay Charger, being built by Ted Childs. She has been 'laid up' for several reasons, but work on her oncemore is now underway. Although this shot does not do her justice you can see that a lot of detail work has been done on the Mast and Radar array (the support Stanchions have yet to be fitted). I am looking forward to when she is finished and making her rounds at the modelling shows - well done Ted.

                            Hi, All.
What I am desperate for are some figures of Naval Personnell size 1/16 as I would like some crew members on my boats, and it seems that the only figures available are lifeboat men Cry      Regards E.S. Childs Drum1 ( TED )
