Hi,

I am having a bit of trouble finding a set of plans for a 63' whaleback, I did find some on a CD in Canada but they have 'disappeared'! I have found most other boats but not the one I am looking for.

Any ideas where to look?

     Cheers Clive...

Hi Clive!

There are a set of plans for a BPBco Type 2, 63ft Whaleback plans available for "Model Boats" magazine for the RAF A/SR and the RN MA/SB in 1:24th scale

I have a plan for the RN 63ft MGB!

By John Pritchard, I thought this was available through Nexus Plans Service but now I can't find them anywhere.

Saw this on eBay, no idea where to get them though.

If hslmouldings' idea draws a blank, try asking John Lambert through his website; if he doesn't know no-one will!

Hi guys

Have read recent discusion regarding Whaleback hul plans. May be able to help. Just developed a set of "faired" hull drawings and about to construct a 1/12 scale hull to prove fairing. If result is OK then I shall be able to provide comparable information to any scale required. Superstructure details are another matter as variants occurred.

regards

Douglas

Hi Douglas,

I got a set of plans off Chris (HSL) and am in the middle of trying to build what should end up looking like a 63' MASB (1/12)

At some point soon I will post some photos so people who have not built a model can say "I can do better than that!" maybe i'll inspire someone to try.

well, you've got to have a go, and considering all I am useing is a battery drill, jigsaw and hacksaw I dont recon it is too bad! when I am one stage further i'll get a photo posted.

 all the best, Clive...

Try searching on eBay for veneer timber. I would imagine it would be good for authentic looking planking on a solid hull.

At my model shop you can get 0.4mm  and 0.8mm plywood! it is about £7 for 2-3 square foot. I suppose you would cut it with scissors or a guillotine? I've not got to that stage yet..

Hello all,

Here is a picture of the progress made on my 12th scale whaleback 63. since the picture was taken I have put 'stringers' in to support the planking. the hold up at the moment is that the 0.8mm plywood I have is paper thin and too flimsy so I amgoing to try 1mm of as near that as possible.

please do not look too closely!!

Ok I have made a bit of (slow) progress, I have put the battery drill and jigsaw away and I now have a guillotine to cut the 1.5mm ply. I'll never win any medals for it but she is a relly shapely hull and when the next layer goes on it will cover a multitude of sins!

Whoever is the first to point out I have planked the bottom the wrong way will not win anything!

Looking good there Clive.

Perhaps a quick coat of something like epoxy and a quick sand and it will look as smooth as glass.

when the second layer of planking is put on it straightens everything up. I have done a bit on the std hull side aft, it really stiffens the hull.

after that I will probably coat it with pva a few times, then probably take a mould off if her.

Clive

I have just dug out the plans I purchased 13 years ago to build my 63' BPB ASRL which I plan to build to 1/12 scale and I thought I would just do some reaserch when I saw this forum. I seems that the 1/12 scale is a popular size I thought I was a bit ambitious but you have just proved my idea is not silly. Can you please let me know what you are doing about power train for your model?

Mike

Hi Mike,

I have nearly finished the second layer of bottom planking and decided yesterday to take it off the base and remove the centers of the rear 3 frames, it is a really goos size and is very light and an amazing shape.

I was going to use a Zenoah  marine engine, I was going to use a gearbox which gives two contra rotating outputs from one input (cant remember the name) but in all honesty I have a 4 foot model with a strimmer engine in it and it absolutely flies so I may just do that! you can get a strimmer from B+Q for £80, that is what powers my other boat.

Good luck!  Clive...

Clive

I was sitting here and considered creating a mould from the finnished hull, what your thoughts on a GRP version of the hull. I have just seen the pictures of a completed model on the index page of this forum with the number S 32 do you know what varient this is? as I hlike its clean unclutered deck area it looks fab.

Hi Mike,

MASB S32 (motor anti submarine boat) have a look at my web page http://www.freewebs.com/masb32/ - http://www.freewebs.com/masb32/

or the MASB section on this forum.

Christians model you saw is of this boat. I am going to end up with something similar looking!

I wil be taking a mould off my model but am unsure wether it is 'exact' enough to be an acceptable standard for selling as I don't thing the keel is precicely straight and I think one of the frames was set a couple of millimeters too low. Apart from that she is looking inspiring.

Clive

Thanks for the link, things are becoming a little clearer now, before I started reaserching the subject I had no idea that there were show many variants of the boats whos shape I fell in love with 15 years ago. One quick question S32 was orderded as a 70' model but reading the info it seems was supplied as a 63' version, am I right? Are you taking pics of your build? If yes will you post to forum or email?

Once again thanks for info

Mike

you are right, the admiralty was 'disappointed' with the performance of the 70 footers.

I am taking photos of the model but they don't show much, the second layer looks like the first! also I am useing my phone as I have not worked out how to 'downsize' photos to 50k! I'll have a sticking session and a trim up soon and post the photos.

oh yes, a lovely boat, lends her lines very well to a motor yacht. (as does the Fairmile B).

I am going from a set of plans from Chris at HSL mouldings (as seen on page 1 of this topic, I cant remember who they are by though, I'll have a look tonight.

My plans are by John Pritchard, they are more like the bottom set with seven frames and a transom. (but with MASB deckhouse)

I am using a set of plans for a 63' ASRL with some hull construcion guidance. They have 5 frames plus the transon. The original ones I bought were 1:24 and I have managed to use a photo copier to enlarge the frames to 1:12 and hope to start cutting the weekend. Do yur plans have any reference numbers?
