For comparison the next picture is MGB56. Opinions?

Here is another one(the one on the right).

Hi All,

Great pictures, being a bit dense, were exactly are these taken? of course I know were the D is, its very close to where I live, been meaning to go and have a look in person, possible a few bits might be worth getting hold of for display. I think that perhaps with the new centre at Poole, and I am just thinking aloud I don't speak for any one other than myself, should we be looking at trying to get a programme together of trying to save some of the prime examples of coastal forces vessels? I know this would take money etc and no easy task but..., a "group" action might come to something.

I have to admit looking at the grey boat again I am not so sure its of interest to us. It would appear to have straight stem.

As for where the pictures are taken, well there all on the same river as the ‘d’ boat. If you look at Google earth you can see them on the north shore a bit further down steam. There looks to be a residential boatyard there. Some of the boats (including the gray one) seem to have been moved to one side and dumped. Perhaps there the boats that have been abandoned in the yard. Possibly dumped out of the yard due to non payment of fees?

One thing I have noticed while looking at Google earth is how many people buy old dumb lighters to put there boats in!. There also seems to be lot of old concrete barges in use at pontoons.

johnk,

Hi. I would be happy to get involved in a "Group Action". Is the first step a meeting face to face and see what support that brings?

Any other comments anyone.

Re "the gray boat" It looks a bit slab sided, no taper stem to stern to be of interest on the other hand it is grey!

Does anyone have any idea where in bitter lake the RAF domestic camp at Fanara was? I was looking on Google earth for the farmile d boats that became houseboats. Iv looked where RAF Fayid was. Its all so heavily developed there is little chance of a dog boat surviving in bitter lake. Either they have been moved out of the area or they have been broken up.

I think the only place anyone will find a ‘d’ will be under the brine layer in the med.(thats if any sank in the med!) Diving expedition anyone?

Someone mentioned Pounds scrapyard (I bet there's a fair few people who'd pay for a tour of that place), there's nothing good on google earth, HMS handy and the 1902 steamer Vigilant look to be visible, oh and a listing submarine location is 50°49'39.91"N   1° 5'29.32"W, just to the south east of that floationg crane looks to be vigilant, then HMS handy looks to be the last before the Motorway, or on the other side may also be her? Unfortunatley the quality is very variable, cars etc can easily be seen in major cities but get to more remote locations, even to see Gay Archer is impossible (I've just realised that she may not have been there when the pictures were taken but she wouldn't be visible)

I still can't work out how to get images off google earth, but if you go to Reedham and look upstream of the swing bridge you will see MTB 81 then downstream you will see Golden Galleon (if I am not mistaken)

Hello,

Regards the Google business, HMC and E cutter Vigillant is now at Faversham Creek in Kent, moved toward end of last year, boat at Reedham should be MTB 102, based at Newsons yard now, could be 81 but I don't think so, last heard on hard standing on the Solent.

Hi all!

Seems i opened a can of worms here with the whole google earth thing.

Just for clarification i checked out my hometown being a nosey git. The only trace i found of myself was an old capri i scrapped in early 2001 parked at the flat i left in late 2001. However my old racing yatch is bang up to date 10mls up the road as the cover only blew off it in november

I dont want to put a downer on any finds you make on google earth but it varies greatly from town to town. Basically its not on your screen in realtime but its definately worth mentioning your finds as what you saw in a creek on a 5yr old picture could be overgrown by trees now but the boats still there. Maybe it isnt but who knows until someone has a proper look??

Its not a certainty but its definatley another feather in our cap!

Wow, I only recently found Google-earth etc and note the references to Ash Island. I spent a lot of time trying to find out about the ex MGB/MTBs said to be moored at and around Ash Island with less success than Google indicates. My main interest is MGB 84 said to have been at Ash Island from the early 1950's until the 1980's. The mention of Ash Island in the context of ex MGB's/MTB's is very interesting.

No new finds here or at least I dont think so. The long boat on the left is I believe a Fairmile C and the long one on the right with the snub nose should be a Fairmile H.

Both boats are located at Bembridge on the Isle of White.

I have placed a red dot over what I believe is S130 partially undercover at Mashams Yard at Torpoint opposite Plymouth.

Google Earth is fun!!

Agree though that sometimes it doesn't work- can't see my parents house.... can see our boat :)

Big white boat on 'bottom' wall of harbour- next to her is blue boat and the next one is our pinnace with our friends yacht moored alongside. Picture taken around July '06 so not too out of date!

so can you se the other mtb type boat you mentioned in your other post anywhere?or is that it the one on the end!

PS welcome to the forum.

No, what I believe to be a HSL from looking at pictures is in Limassol. I can't be too sure of it's exact location though- and the picture isn't quite clear enough for me to figure it out!

Boat on the end is/was a Russian designed and built day cruise boat. Sadly sank on its way to Limassol for scrapping- hey! new dive site!

Okay.... it should be somewhere in this picture!

Co-ordinates are as follows

34 deg 39'52.44" N / 33 deg 01'46.12" E

Limassol, Cyprus- an area known as Billy's Yard but not sign-posted or anything. It's between the old port and the New Port...

Hubby can't find picture either. I might have to go to Limassol for the day to take some other photos of it!

HSL identity more-or-less confirmed. See my other posts! She is number 2625. Any info anyone?

Date Posted: 06 March 2007 at 9:23pm

Pictures and info from Ron Young. ex RAF 2625 was confiscated after being caught running contraband.

She was a 68ft British Power Boat Co Type 2 HSL, a.k.a. a "Hants & Dorset".

Take it the ventilation was added by customs. She is a sorry looking tub. Does the sun damage mean the timbers totalled or could linseed oil or saltwater tighten things up again?

Prob scrap but worth asking, i dont know on those things, theyr all wet & rotten here

Mega sun damage. Timbers v.dry and peel away from sides- but surprisingly still strong enough to be be walked on deck! I guess it 'could' be repaired if you were dedicated but would cost a heck of a lot of money with the price of mahogany these days! Would take gallons and gallons of linseed oil!!!!

Can you still get mahogany out there?

We have to make do with 'politically correct' wood over here, or strip another boat. Got a list of rotten hulks to check out over here in hope of making a good one from a few wrecks.

Can you put some pics of the inside up?

I belive Mahogany is not totally banned in the uk. However to get mahogany you need a special import permit.

I assume restoring an historic vessel with like for like would enable you to get a permit.

Anyone know anymore details than that?

That sounds about right. know you can get it for grade1 listed buildings(only if theyre deemed at risk, paperwork done, fall down without it, permits ect. mind you thats before you can pick up a saw)

Can it be got for any of these old warboats or do they have to be on the 'core list' of historic vessels? Does it count for salaged mahogany? would hope not as no rainforrest being cut down if you dismantle an old hulk into a container.

I will put some interior shots up in the HSL forum if that's ok? Best to keep in topic eh

Can we still get mahogany? Doubt it! We have access to some salvaged from a wreck but its small fry compared to what would be needed to rescue this boat!

Cyprus doesn't have much wood at all- most of the wood imported here is bog-standard pressure treated pine.... ahh well!
