For people who never managed to go to sea or for those who did but did not do any time on Trampers the magazine "Shipping Today and Yesterday" is running a series of  great articles  written by the late Captain Michael Cavaghan in which he describes his time at sea in the 50's/60's/70's and some of the more obscure Ports he visited as we all did when  we were Tramping, he describes the lawlessness of those places. It is sometimes difficult for people today to appreciate and accept that docking at those places for crews was like entering the "Wild West/East"  the carrying of guns and knives was an accepted  practise and you are not "winding them up" when you tell them that there were times you were lucky to get back to the security of the ship on some occasions!!! He has put it down on paper very well.
