I intend to renovate a 1/24th scale model Whaleback I have back to sailing condition. It is currently marked as 141 with a black hull and grey/yellow superstructure. I would really like to change the colour scheme.
Was the Whaleback ever painted in the white hull scheme ? I have seen this on seaplane tenders, GS pinnaces, Hants & Dorsets and even on a Type 1 (#113).
If not, is there any alternative scheme to those typically seen ?

The 70ft Canadian Power Boat Co Whaleback RAF HSLs were all-over grey, there's a rather good photo here;

As far as I am aware (and I was hoping Donald would have already answered your query) no 63ft Whalebacks were painted in the tropical scheme, however  I have seen a photo of HSL 163 (a 63ft boat) in over-all grey whilst in service in Trombay.

Thanks for your trouble !

I had similar thoughts about going for a white hulled MGB where the changes would be quite minimal (eg turrets). There's a step-by-step article by John Pritchard in the February 1980 Airfix Magazine on how to turn an RAF Whaleback into MGB 43. However I grew up in my formative years as an RAF brat so I would like to keep my model RAF !

One of the John Pritchard articles states :
''Although the Whalebacks saw much service around the coasts of Britain, many were later shipped to the Mediterranean and some even to India.''
And not in the tropical scheme ??

Earlier this year I visited the Aviation Museum in Malta. They have a nice model of Whaleback 128 which was based at RAF Kalafrana (which we visited) and it was painted in the black & yellow scheme. Same goes for their model of Type 1 107 also based at Kalfrana.

Your comment about Whaleback 163 in grey intrigues me. If you stumble across the photo and could publish it it would be very grateful. I had to look up 'Trombay' and found it to be located in India. I guess the grey scheme may have been a local solution to counteract below-decks climate issues.
